Because of this, the citys debt to assets ratio for both 2012 and 2013 was around 0.34.There are some redeeming qualities about Escondidos financials however. First, due to the increase in the revenues per capita, $526.16 in 2013 versus $470.65 in 2012, the government would be able to continue current service levels without trying to obtain new revenue sources, such as increasing the tax rate. The government seems like it can handle its own when it comes to its ability to pay its short- term obligations as they become due. While the current ratio has decreased by 10% from 2012 to 2013, the ratio is still incredibly high at around 17.6 in 2013. This means that the government's current assets are at least 17 times that of its current liabilities, making it more than able to pay off its short-term obligations which is seemingly contrary to its operating revenues ratio. However, this is just for its current liabilities, not long term debt such as its bonds which were an entirely different case. The BTA self-sufficiency ratios for 2013 and 2012 are both more than 1.00, 1.035 for 2013 and 1.019 for 2012. This means that the business-type activities run by the city of Escondido are self-sufficient and do not require any other payments from the city, such as taxes and the like that are not related to the business-type activities themselves.Other financial ratios of note are the employees per capita and property taxes per capita. There is barely a change in the number of (municipal) employees per capita, 0.0075 for 2013 and 0.0074 for 2012. Also, for Escondido's CAFR for 2013 and 2 012, there is no distinction between part-time and full-time employees. Finally, there are no personnel costs displayed anywhere in Escondido's CAFR for 2013 or 2012. However, based on page 176 of Escondido's CAFR for 2013, the total number of municipal employees have largely remained stable for the past ten years, only spiking in 2006 to 2008, so it seems that these employees are reasonable in number considering this factor. Based on Escondidos property taxes per capita for 2013, taxpayers are burdened with $70.32 in property taxes, up from $68.12 for the previous year. However, the population between these two years barely changed as it increased by 150 from 2012 to 2013, reaching a current total of 146,057. This means that the property tax rate, or other factors, primarily caused the increase.Based on my analysis of the city of Escondidos financial statements using the selected ratios, it appears that the city is in weak financial health. This is largely due to the significant de cline in the citys fund balance which, as mentioned before, hinders its ability to deal with decreases in revenue or fiscal emergencies. Whats more is that the current liabilities to operating revenue ratio is around four times greater than the 5% ideal ratio.Also, the city has a very high amount of total liabilities, which account for around 34% of its total assets and a significant portion of these liabilities are comprised of net bonds. These factors, even when considering Escondidos high unemployment rate and low personal income per capita, are signs of weak financial health. The fact that the city seems to be taking in a lot of bonds when its own economy doesnt appear to be strong enough to withstand the burden does not appear to be a fiscally sound move based on the selected ratios and the analysis derived from them.Financial comparison to a similar entity for a one year periodSan Marcos is a city to the west of Escondido that contains a population of around 87,000 and it offe rs, more or less, the same services as Escondido. This includes police, fire departments, community services, public works and others. Like Escondido, San Marcos economic environment seems to be service-based with top employers such as United Parcel Service, Wal-Mart store, Inc., Frys Electronics and others. Of note is Hunter Industries Inc. which has around 2.45% of total employment as of 2013, or 725 total employees. Also, San Marcos has a higher per capita personal income in comparison to Escondido. San Marcos has $49,719 as of 2012 while Escondido has $20,836 in the same year. Also, San Marcos has an unemployment rate of 7.35% in the same year while Escondido has 9.3%. Another notable difference is that San Marcos has only one business type activity, the Creekside Marketplace, while Escondido has at least two which is its water and wastewater services. These factors are taken into consideration for the financial ratio comparison of these two cities.Escondido takes in far more re venues per capita compared to San Marcos, $526.16 versus $47.15. This is due primarily to the fact that Escondido has far more business-type activities than San Marcos. Escondido has around $76.8 million while San Marcos has only $4.1 million. Escondido also has more employees per capita compared to San Marcos, 0.0075 versus 0.0045. This is probably expected as Escondido has more business-type activities than San Marcos. San Marcos has a far higher general fund balances ratio compared to Escondido, 34.59 to 0.27, which means that San Marcos' government can easily withstand financial emergencies that would appear trivial to it while being catastrophic for Escondido. Since San Marcos has very little operating revenues from its business type activities, its current liability ratio is extremely high compared to Escondido, 310% to 19.9%. However, what is even more apparent is that San Marcos's current liabilities account for nearly half of the city's total liabilities, around $12.7 milli on out of $23.2 million, indicating that San Marcos has far less long term debt relative to Escondido. On the other hand, the ideal current liabilities to operating revenues ratio should be 5% and neither one of these cities have achieved that ideal benchmark. Since San Marcos' total liabilities are extremely small compared to Escondido's, and that San Marcos' total assets are also greater, the city's Debt-to-assets ratio is only a fraction of Escondido's. San Marcos has a debt-to-assets ratio of 0.024 versus Escondido's 0.343, indicating that San Marcos' assets are primarily funded by sources other than debt. Like Escondido, San Marcos is more than able to pay off its short-term obligations as they become due, though San Marcos is slightly better with a ratio of 20.8 versus Escondido's 17.6. Introduction Out of the three assessments of multiple intelligence, preferred learning style and left right brain I believe that multiple intelligences was the most accurate assessment. The assessment is designed to help work out in what ways you are intelligent, such as logical, linguistic, visual, musical intrapersonal, interpersonal, and kinaesthetic and naturalistic. Mr. Swinmurn wanted to start an online store that catered to selling a great selection of shoe after going to a mall and he could not find the shoes he was looking for (Eng 2012; Zappos. com). The website was dedicated to the selling of wide variety of brands, colors, sizes, and widths; if you are looking for a shoe chances are Zappos. com has them. There was finally a website customers could go and shop for the best shoes and have no trouble returning the shoes if it did not fit. The website started by Nick Swinmurn going into stores and actually taking pictures of shoes then selling them on the website (Eng, D. 2012). This was done by the company actually buying the inventory then selling it on the website. To make Zappos the online shoe giant, Swinmurn teamed up with investor Tony Hsieh who was later named CEO and helped grow the company (Eng, 2012; Kopelman at. el, 2012; Zappos. com). The company started making profits slowly after making a commitment to customer services; gaining loyal customers. In Early 2009 the company was sold to Amazon, closing a $1. 2 billion deal (Kopelman at. El, 2012). Not only did Swinmurn and Hsieh build a company but they also build a whole new culture. This paper will examine the culture of Zappos. com, the factors that demonstrated the culture, the type of leader that would be best suited for the company’s culture, and the culture change needed to if there was a decline in sells. Examine the Culture: The Zappos company brand is known as a culture that is fun, unique, and customer centered. The company has ten core values, which drives the culture of the company. The core values speak to the company’s culture. The values includes â€Å"embrace and drive change†, â€Å"create fun and a little weirdness†, ‘do more with less†, and â€Å"be humble† (Zappos. com). Number one for the company is to â€Å"deliver WOW through services† (Zappos. com). According to the company’s website delivering the WOW through services means delivering something innovated, unconventional, and something that is beyond what is expected (Zappos.com). Due to this core value many costumers would agree that Zappos. com is top when it comes to customer services. The company shows their dedication for service by the way they have set up the companies operations. The company has a â€Å"customer loyalty department† who job it is to ensure the customer receives the best service possible and are mixed with other departments like the resources desk, quality assurance and anti-fraud teams (Boone and Kurtz, 2012). Having this type of team makes a different in the service the customer of Zappos. com receives. According to Boone and Kurtz (2012), â€Å"Customers loyalty team members have the authority to send individual customers personal notes or request flowers for a wedding or anniversary celebration. They don’t need to ask permission to issue refunds or coupons or ask to give out their contact information† (Page 344). Many customers notice the difference when a customer service rep can issue a refund without having to get approval and will continue to go back to the site to make another purchase. This is a small policy but makes a big difference. Another way the company show their loyalty to customer service is they post the customer service number at the top of every page on the website and the line is 24/7 (Kopelman at. el, 2012). Customer can call when they have a problem and not wait until the next business day. Explain how the selected organization showed the signs of the culture: Customer service is not the only factor that drives the company’s culture the company is also employee driven. Employee satisfaction is also a key component to great customer service; it is hard to have one with out the other. The core values that has also shaped the company’s culture is â€Å"Create fun and a little weirdness† and â€Å"Be adventurous, creative, and open-mined† (Zappos. com). According to the website these values embodies the idea of embracing the uniqueness and diversity of the company’s employees while encouraging creativity, adventure, and innovation with a hint of weirdness (Zappos. com). Due to the fact employees do not have to check with management to in order to help the customers, employee’s are tasked with coming up with out the box ways to provide better customer service (Kopelman at., el 2012; and Zappos. com). According to the Kopelman article, â€Å"Zappos also encourages employees to respond spontaneously and warmly to customers†¦One Zappos employee, for example, sent flowers to the funeral of a customer’s husband, an action that was taken without first checking with a supervisor. Determine the factors that caused the organization to embody this particular culture: Innovation has been another key component for Zappos. com Inc. The company itself was started by an innovated idea of having a large inventory shoe store online and it has continued to be innovated from offering free shipping to having an intelligent tracking system. Such innovation has been geared towards a productivity-driven practice. Normally inventory is stocked in a warehouse by stacking the shoes with the same brand by each other; however Zappos tracks each pair of shoe allowing for random stacking and saves lots of time (Kopelman at. , el, 2012). This means the shoes or products gets to the consumer faster. Determine what type of leader would be best suited for this organization: A company with a unique and fun culture like Zappos would need a just as fun and unique leader. The leader of this company would need to be a transformational leader, one who leads by developing relationship with the employees and motivate them to complete goals (Cavazotte, Moreno, and Bernardo 2013). Having this type of leader would be important due to the fact the employees are expected to make decision without approval or impute from management. The culture of Zappos.  com rewards out of the box thinking and support being the company who does things differently. If there is a decline in demand determine what the change in culture would need to be in response to this situation: One foreseeable decline would be lack the of sells and new customers. There are a lot of new sites that off offer shoes. There are now sites like Just Fab that offer to send one pair of shoes a month for one low price. Theses customer are getting the convenience of having an online stylist where they don’t have to do the shopping or searching for items they like. These sites gather information about the member and each month a stylist pick out items that would likely appeal to the certain member. The culture of a company shapes everything. A company’s culture is the foundation of how the company is run and when there is a decline the culture has to change. However if there is a decline in Zappos’ decline the culture can remain the same. The current culture allows for the company to constantly to change and to come up with new ideas.
